Updating the desktop app

How to update the AgentHere desktop app on Windows, macOS, and Linux: where to get the installer, how to install it over the old version, and keep your data.

The app doesn't update itself yet: you download the new version and install it over the old one. Your account, agents, chat history, and settings are preserved — the installer updates the app in place instead of adding a second copy next to it.

How to update

  1. Quit AgentHere. If an agent is running a long task, wait for it to finish — quitting interrupts the run.
  2. Download the installer from the download page — the site picks the right build for your OS.
  3. Run the installer. You don't need to uninstall the previous version first.
  4. Launch the app. You usually stay signed in; if it asks, sign in with a device code as on first install (details).

Windows

  1. Close all AgentHere windows.
  2. Download agenthere-electron-win-x64.exe for most PCs, or agenthere-electron-win-arm64.exe for Windows on ARM (Snapdragon laptops, for example).
  3. Run the file. Windows may warn that it protected your PC: the build isn't code-signed yet. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".
  4. Wait for the install to finish and launch AgentHere.

The installer installs per user; administrator rights aren't required.

Check your version

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and find AgentHere — the version is listed there.

macOS

  1. Quit the app (Cmd+Q).

  2. Download agenthere-electron-mac-arm64.dmg for Apple Silicon (M1 and newer) or agenthere-electron-mac-x64.dmg for Intel.

  3. Open the .dmg, drag AgentHere into Applications, and confirm replacing the previous copy.

  4. Clear the quarantine attribute — the build isn't notarized yet. Open Terminal (Cmd+Space, type "Terminal") and run:

    bash
    sudo xattr -cr /Applications/AgentHere.app

If the app lives elsewhere, use your own path.

  5. Launch AgentHere. If macOS warns about an unidentified developer, click "Open".

Check your version

In Finder, select AgentHere, press Cmd+I and read the "Version" field. Or open the "AgentHere" menu → "About AgentHere".

Linux

  1. Quit the app.

  2. Download agenthere-electron-linux-x86_64.AppImage from the download page.

  3. Replace the old file with the new one — the file name doesn't change, so putting the new file where the old one was is enough. If it lost the executable bit, restore it:

    bash
    chmod +x agenthere-electron-linux-x86_64.AppImage
  4. Run the AppImage. If a desktop or dock shortcut points to another folder, update the path in the shortcut.

An AppImage needs no installation: updating means replacing a single file. Your settings and chat history live elsewhere and survive the swap.

What is preserved

Everything about your work lives in the app's data folder, not in the install folder:

  • %APPDATA%\ru.agenthere.desktop — Windows;
  • ~/Library/Application Support/ru.agenthere.desktop — macOS;
  • ~/.config/ru.agenthere.desktop — Linux.

Your sign-in and session history are there too. The installer never touches this folder, so after an update you stay in your account with agents and chats intact. Don't delete this folder: your sign-in and history go with it.

Update when no agent is working: an unfinished run is interrupted and has to be started again.

If something goes wrong

  • Windows: the installer won't run. Make sure AgentHere is really closed, then run the installer again. If antivirus blocks it, add the installer to exclusions for the duration of the install.
  • macOS won't launch the app. Re-run the xattr -cr step — quarantine comes back if the image was unpacked again.
  • Linux: the file won't start. Check the executable bit (chmod +x) and download the AppImage again if the download was interrupted.
  • The app asks you to sign in. That's the normal device-code flow: approve the code in your browser — instructions.
  • Something broke after the update. Write to support with your OS, the app version, and what happened.

If the app hangs, refuses to sign in, or behaves oddly, you can return it to a "just installed" state — see below.

Resetting the app

A reset helps when the app won't start, hangs, won't let you into your account, or behaves oddly after an update.

Try the gentle option first: sign out and sign in again — the "Sign Out" button under Settings → AgentHere. That fixes sign-in and sync problems while keeping your chat history and installed agents in place.

A full reset is the last resort: the app deletes its local data and signs out of your account.

How to reset

  • In the app: Settings → AgentHere → "Reset app", then confirm.
  • If the app won't open: on the error screen, click "Reset everything". Before that you can click "Export logs" there and attach the file to a support request — the logs show what went wrong.

The app closes, deletes its data, and starts again — like a fresh install.

What gets deleted

  • Your sign-in: you'll sign in again with a device code.
  • The local chat history that lived in the app: it's stored on your computer and doesn't come back after a reset.
  • Downloaded copies of your agents and skills (the ~/.agenthere folder: agent files, skill files, and the installed list).
  • App settings and caches.

What stays in place

  • Your account and balance.
  • Your agents, skills, and everything created in the account: the reset touches the computer, not the account.
  • Cloud agents that run on the server — a reset doesn't affect them.
  • Your history in web chat and Telegram — those are separate histories kept on the server.
  • Your project files on disk: the app doesn't touch them.

After the reset

  1. Sign in with a device code, as on a first install.
  2. Install the agents you need: they live in your account, not on the computer. When the app sees that local copies are missing, it offers to install them (the sync banner); you can also do it manually in the agent settings.

If the app won't start at all

Then the in-app reset isn't reachable — remove the local data by hand. Quit the app and rename the folders: renaming keeps a copy in case you need it.

Windows: in Explorer, type %APPDATA% in the address bar and rename the ru.agenthere.desktop folder; then rename the .agenthere folder in %USERPROFILE%.

macOS:

bash
mv "$HOME/.agenthere" "$HOME/.agenthere.old"
mv "$HOME/Library/Application Support/ru.agenthere.desktop" "$HOME/Library/Application Support/ru.agenthere.desktop.old"

Linux:

bash
mv ~/.agenthere ~/.agenthere.old
mv ~/.config/ru.agenthere.desktop ~/.config/ru.agenthere.desktop.old
mv ~/.local/share/agenthere ~/.local/share/agenthere.old
mv ~/.cache/agenthere ~/.cache/agenthere.old

Then launch the app and sign in. Don't delete the renamed folders right away: make sure everything works first.

FAQ

Will it update itself?

No. Auto-update isn't wired up yet, so updates are manual, as described on this page. The "Check for Updates…" menu item (macOS) currently returns an error; it will work once auto-update is enabled.

Do I need to uninstall the old version first?

No. The installer updates the app in place. Uninstall only if the app misbehaves and you want a clean install — but save the chats you need first, because the data folder goes with the app.

Will I lose my agents, skills, and chat history?

No. They live in the data folder, not the install folder, and survive the update.

Can I roll back to a previous version?

Only the current build is published; we don't keep older ones. If the new version gets in your way, write to support.

Will a reset delete my agents and chats?

Agents — no: they live in your account, and the computer only holds downloaded copies you can install again after a reset. The chat history that was in the app, however, is deleted by a reset and doesn't come back — settings go with it. Histories in web chat and Telegram are not affected. See Resetting the app for details.

How do I know I'm on the new version?

Check the app version the way described for your system (see the sections above). If you're unsure the build is fresh, just download the installer from the download page and run it again: reinstalling changes nothing else and keeps your data.
